This route connects the Forno hut with the Albigna hut and consists of three routes that can also be done as one-day hikes: the Forno panorama trail, Pass dal Casnil and Gran giro del Lago.
We recommend an overnight stay in the two huts to be able to fully enjoy the route.

Author’s recommendation

Book the cabins in advance, especially at weekends and in high season.

From the Albigna reservoir, you can reach Pranzaira comfortably by cable car (last ride at 4:30 pm) or on foot along a steep forest trail in about 2h.

Safety information

Difficulty: The Pass da Casnil and il Gran giro del Lago are the most difficult sections of the route with T4/T5. The paths are partly exposed and at some points there are metal chains that make the climbing passages safer and more enjoyable. It is possible to encounter snowfields along the way, especially at the beginning of the season. More information

Turn-by-turn directions

Day 1: Altitude difference (uphill) 750 m, time 6 h, difficulty T3+

Departure is at Maloja Pass. Follow the road to the Cavloc lake and continue on a flat path. At the Fornotal/Murettopass junction, you have the choice between the direct route to the Forno Hut (approx. 3h) through the Fornotal and the Panorama Trail. To get to the latter, cross the bridge and climb towards the Murettopass. At about 2300m, the path branches off to the right across the stream to the Forno Hut. It passes the Laghetto di Rossi and leads through gravel fields and boulder dumps past another lake also at about 2750 m to the Forno Hut (2574 m).

Day 2: Ascent 700 m, descent 620 m, time 6 h, difficulty T5

From the hut, descend in steep serpentines from the marginal moraine to the Val Forno glacier basin. Downstream, you cross the glacier stream on a small bridge and climb towards the south-western part over tracks and rock slabs. Above the steep section secured with chains, a wide, gravelly gravel basin follows to the Pass da Casnil Sud (2950 m). The descent to the Albigna hut (2331 m) follows first a traverse through rough boulders and then in the direction of the lake passing a few small lakes. The route is partly exposed but equipped with chains and iron steps

Day 3 : Difference in altitude 650 m uphill, 700 m downhill, time 5h, difficulty T5

From the Albigna hut, climb slightly downhill on a path on the east side of the lake and then on the rocky path to the Albigna glacier. On the west side of the lake, you climb uphill on a fixed rope route and then downhill on the old path to the Cacciabella pass to the dam wall. The route is partly exposed and often equipped with chains and iron steps. From the dam wall, an easy path leads down to the cable car stop.
