Giovanni Segantini is considered a great innovator of Alpine painting and an important representative of symbolism in the fin-de-siècle. His work “Werden- La vita“ was created at this location.
“Werden - La vita“ shows the landscape near Soglio in Bergell on the Plan Luder plateau in the setting sun. In the background, the Sciora group is visible on the left and the Bondasca glacier on the right. The viewer's gaze is drawn by the descending path to mother and child, the actual centre of the picture. The mother seems to be part of the pine tree and Segantini said that the picture represents “[...] the life of all things that have their roots in Mother Nature.“ The branches of the tree reach up to the sky. They represent a connection between earth and sky, from which the view is directed down the slope of the mountain on the right to the two women on the path.
