The name «Porta» describes the geographical bottleneck of this area and originates from the name «Porta Bergalliae», which is mentioned in 840 in the imperial Rhaetian archives together with the castle.
Nossa Dona
Heading from Stampa toward the Italian border, just before Promontogno, on top of a hill that divides the valley, we see the church of Santa Maria di Castromuro, better known as Nossa Donna, and an imposing, five-story square tower. This tower dates from the 14th century and is a remnant of the feudal Castelmur Castle, which was built a century before the tower and of which little remains. In the Middle Ages, Bergell was a single parish, subordinate to the diocese of Chur. Nossa Donna was the main church of the valley. In the years 1845-50, Giovanni Castelmur, the Baron of Coltura, had it rebuilt on the old foundations without the Romanesque bell tower.
