Nature and culture in the region of Fribourg

Much of the region of Fribourg is flat to hilly, characterized by traditional agriculture, forests and protected moorland. In the south, however, the region also has its share of high mountains - at 2390 m, the Vanil Noir is the highest peak. Between the mountain peaks and the sandy beaches on the shores of Lake Neuchâtel stretch a variety of natural landscapes, with pretty historic towns in between. Perfect for discovering on foot or by bike!

A trip to the region of Fribourg is worthwhile all year round. In spring you can walk among blooming flowers, in summer you can escape the heat by swimming at Lake Neuchâtel, Lake Morat or the many smaller lakes in the region. In autumn you can enjoy the golden rays of the sun on an alpine hut, surrounded by colorful forests. Or you can visit the wine festivals of the two wine-growing regions! A trip to snow-covered Fribourg is also worthwhile in winter, for example for a city trip or snowshoe hiking.

Off to the outdoors: scenic highlights

Pristine nature, great biodiversity and plenty of fresh air await you in Fribourg. In the south of the region lies the legendary Schwarzsee in the primeval landscape of Brecca, an enchantingly wild valley that was formed tens of thousands of years ago by melting glaciers. Surrounded by steep limestone walls, you can hike here across picturesque alpine meadows and through ancient mountain forests. On the way, there are several alpine huts where you can stop to enjoy the magnificent view and regional specialties.

Further south, on the other side of the imposing peaks above the Breccaschlund, lies the Jaun waterfall. Directly opposite the pretty village center, up to 6000 liters of water per second plunge down into the Jaunbach - a natural spectacle worth seeing!

Historical paths through Freiburg

In the capital city of Fribourg (Fribourg), one of the largest historic city centers in Switzerland is waiting to be discovered by you. The river Saane meanders through Fribourg, enclosing most of the old town on three sides.

The town was founded as early as the 12th century. The architecture and art of bygone times can still be admired today: historic buildings, numerous bridges and fortifications line the Saane. Museums and exhibition halls round out the offerings for culture lovers.
